FOREPLAY
(a zine to warm my creativity)

7-31-2020

This zine is an experiment in media. I’m flopping the creative process back and forth between computer and pen/ink/paint as I’m very comfortable creating digitally as well as on paper. In fact, I absolutely love code switching like this. The digital world helps me stay graphic and tight while the analog world reminds me that life is unpredictable and loose. This zine is currently mostly in its digital phase right now, but will be printed for painting soon. These are just some details:

ROTATIONALS

7-29-2020

I have access to so much cardboard. Why not use it right? I have around 23 of these ‘rotationals’ that I keep around and paint on. Extra paint on my brush - hit the rotationals. Current painting drying - hit the rotationals. Bored on the couch, need to figure out some colors, just need some creative meditation - hit the rotationals. These are probably something I’ll continue to do, forever. I love consistency. I’ll put them all in frames and cover a whole wall - it will look pretty cool.

THE BIG PINK
(working title)

7-28-2020

18” x 24” - Almost finished with this big pink monstrosity. I’ve been pouring much of my quarantine depression nightmares into a couple of paintings, this being one of them. Painting always seems to help me cope, it must be the meditative state I enter when I’m really in it. The final stretch on this one, just have to figure out what to do with the center there - hardest part.

A FEW NEW PIECES

COMEDY

TRAGEDY

An experiment in speed and simplicity. If you’ve been following me for a while you know that speed and simplicity are in no way things I would attribute to my work. But I’m working on it. I promise I can change. #DetailholicsAnonymous — Simple yellow circles, penciled, inked, shaded, and signed. Clearly these are an Ian-Hot-Take on the Comedy & Tragedy masks from ancient Greek theatre. Obvi.

EXITUS IN TENEBRIS

The opposite of speed and simplicity, this piece firmly grasps the other end of these spectrums. Heavy heavy detail and endless eras of time are the main ingredients. This painting was entirely about painting with no rules, no limits, just pure Ian subconscious imaginings come to reality. ‘Exitus in tenebrins’ translates to ‘exit from the darkness’ which is now more relevant than ever as I find painting to be one of my paths out of the haunted woods of the darkest timeline we’re in. Cheers.
